It is no secret that many other folks who aren’t necessarily sports fans may know Mark Cuban from the hit TV show “Shark Tank.”
However, Mark Cuban is a big name in the sports world. His main claim to fame is his status as the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks owner. However, there have been many times in which he has tried to pursue ownership of sports teams and entities. In this article, we will look at the history of Mark Cuban as a sports owner and his efforts to pursue ownership of other sports teams.
Based on the wealth that Mark Cuban amassed from his sale of the Broadcast.com venture, Mark Cuban purchased the Mavericks on January 4th, 2000.
During Cuban’s 23-year tenure, the Dallas Mavericks have made the playoffs 18 out of the last 23 years. This included two trips to the Western Conference Finals as well as 2 trips to the NBA Finals. After losing in the finals in 2005-2006, the Dallas Mavericks would win the 2010-2011 NBA Finals in six games over the Miami Heat.
Mark Cuban is one of the more visible owners in NBA history. While most owners sit in the skybox, he sits right by the team bench. While his passion for the team was lauded, it would get him in trouble quite a bit. The NBA has fined him over 1 million dollars for incidents such as criticizing league policies and officials and yelling at opposing players.
In November 2005, Mark Cuban looked into a possible purchase of the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, he was told by the owners of the Pittsburgh Pirates that they had no interest in selling.
During Cuban’s tenure as Mavericks owner, he attempted to buy a Major League Baseball team three separate times. In 2008, Mark Cuban put up a bid of 1.3 billion dollars to buy the Chicago Cubs. He made it to the second round of bidding. However, he was not invited to partake in the final bidding process in 2009.
In August 2010, Mark Cuban bid to purchase the Texas Rangers with another investor. Cuban bid $600 million to purchase the Texas Rangers, yet he lost out on the deal.
In January 2012, Mark Cuban put an initial bid for the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, he failed to make it to the second round of bidding. In his opinion, he thought that the price of the franchise was driven too high due to the franchise’s TV rights.
Mark Cuban also made efforts to purchase the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005. One year later, Cuban joined an investment group with Dan Marino and other investors to acquire the Penguins. However, the Penguins rejected the group’s bid when the ownership of the Pittsburgh Penguins took the team off the market.
In spite of his recent failures in purchasing sports teams, Mark Cuban was successful in a bid last year. He became the first team owner and investor of a new pickleball league known as the Vibe Pickleball League. This six-team league is set to launch in 2023.
